“This is why I’m hot” is a Hip Hop song from 2007 that I love. M.I.M.S. is the artist (Music Is My Savior.) The chorus goes, “…This is why I’m hot: I’m hot cuz I’m fly, you ain’t cuz you not, this is why, this is why, this is why I’m hot.” When I first heard it it seemed sort of illogical. You can’t say that you’re hot only because you’re fly. But then I got it. Spiritually speaking, we need no other reason to be “fly” or “hot” (exceptioinal, great, awesome) other than the fact that we exist. No actions can make us fly. We become fly by believing we are fly. This is a transcendent idea. Religious scripture of all kinds tells us that God thinks we’re fly already, no matter what, no matter who we are, or what we do. And God resides within us. We are God manifested. So this chorus is a feedback loop of truly being in the present moment with the god within us. That’s how I see it. It is why the beauty of Hip Hop brings me to tears sometimes. So, since I’m working on transcending the idea that what I ‘do’ is who I am, and just being who I am, I made ‘this is why’ my title.
The “…don’t stop ’til…” line refers to the eastern religious concept of removing the lotus petals in one’s life to get to the spiritual jewel that resides within us. It also references a line from Dead Prez, from their song, Hip-Hop. The line says, “This [is] real Hip Hop and it don’t stop, til we get the po po off the block.” One could write a book about this song, but in a nutshell, real Hip Hop is being Real, it’s accessing the jewel in the lotus, and this action must not stop within all of us until all the voices in your head, all the demons, all the enemies (or the police in their case) are removed and you are the real person you are meant to be, freely expressing who you are at all times. Freedom from the cycle of suffering. This is the goal.
